Quilts, Watercolor
and Collage
Stephanie
Hall is a local artist who was born and raised in Juneau, Alaska. Apparently
my father and grandfather had artistic abilities, but I didn't realize
I had more than my quilting talent until I was in her 30s and took a
couple of art classes at the University of Alaska Southeast.
In
1994 my husband had an opportunity to go to (Rosanna) Melbourne, Australia
on a teacher exchange. While he and our three children were in school
there, I pursued my talents more seriously. I studied watercolor painting
and took workshops in silkscreen printing, silk painting, calligraphy,
papermaking, and quilting. I have incorporated much from those workshops
into collages.
After taking a watercolor
quilting workshop from Donna Slusser and Pat Magaret, I fell in love
with arranging those pesky two inch squares into beautiful works of
art. Most all of my quilts are my own design. I have experimented with
painting my own fabric and get some interesting effects from sun painting
on those rare sunny summer days in Juneau!
Much of my inspiration
comes from the view outside my studio that is
surrounded by the beauty of the ocean, mountains, and trees. Some of
my work portrays that beauty as well as the joy of life and a sense
of humor.
In my day job I
work in the Alaska State Legislature as assistant chief
clerk writing the House Journal for the House of Representatives.
