Patti Baumgartner
Patti Baumgartner, a low vision artist, creates art from stone, ceramics, and found objects. Patti studied fine arts at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and Southeast during the 1980's. Patti has been a member of the Juneau Artists Gallery since 2000. Patti owns Sandpiper Studios in Juneau. At her studio, Patti creates sculptures, paintings and ceramics. Patti’s husband Jim casts ceramics for Patti’s carvings and fires the kiln. Recently, Patti and Jim's friend Ivan James, a Tlingit native artist of the Eagle Clan, has stretched hides making drums and wall hangings for Patti to use for her designs.
As a low vision artist, Patti's art is meant to be touched. Patti incorporates flights of fancy and a sense of humor to create art projects and uses everything, from cast clay, canvas, to objects found in nature, whether it be driftwood, old bones, stones, and rocks. Patti's favorite medium is clay.
In the past, Patti has instructed sculpture techniques, ceramics, painting, and mask-making for students of all ages and abilities at local schools, recreation centers, and the Juneau Fine Arts Camp. Patti’s work has been published in the Ceramic Arts Magazine.
