About the Artist:
Lincoln & Tasha are the duo creating the handmade lampwork beads
at Basement Studios. Tasha has been an Alaskan resident for
over ten years. They met while studying music at Western Washington
University seven years ago and decided to move back to Alaska after
they graduated. They have been living in Juneau together for four years
and make their home on Douglas Island with their two dogs.
Their studio is located in their basement (hence the name) and is functioning
year round, unless the temperature drops below 20 degrees, which can
cause "fussiness" with the glass.
The beads: The beads that are created at Basement Studios
are considered lampwork beads. Simply put, lampwork beads are formed
by melting rods of glass in a flame and wrapping them around a steel
mandrel. The term “lampworking” has been around for thousands
of years. Originally, beads were made using oil lamps to melt the glass.
Each bead they create is one of a kind. They can take anywhere from
15 minutes to an hour. It all depends on the techniques used, layering
of glass, size and amount of glass. They use “soft glass”
that is made in Italy. All of their beads are annealed in a kiln to
assure a stronger more durable bead.
After the beads are cooled and cleaned, Tasha & Lincoln incorporate
them into jewelry creations such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets,
and pins. They use sterling silver ear wires, chains and clasps to accent
the uniqueness of each bead.
